Why Florida AC systems fail at the worst possible time

This isn’t bad luck. An air conditioner works hardest during the hottest part of the day, and a component that is marginal (a weak capacitor, a contactor with burnt points, a system running slightly low on refrigerant) will hold up at 78 degrees and fail at 95. The failure happens at peak load, which in Florida is late afternoon through evening, in July and August, and on the weekends when everyone is home.

It is also why holiday weekends are among our busiest calls.

Worth being honest, because not everything does, and we’d rather tell you that than bill you for a night call you didn’t need.

What to do before we arrive

Genuinely useful, and some of it occasionally solves the problem outright:

Check the breaker: both the indoor air handler and the outdoor unit have one. If it has tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and tell us; that is an electrical fault, and resetting it repeatedly is a fire risk.
Check the thermostat: batteries, and that nobody has knocked it to “heat” or “fan”.
Look for ice on the copper line or the indoor coil. If there is ice, switch the system to fan only. It has to thaw before anything can be tested, and starting that now means we can actually diagnose it when we get there.
If water is collecting, switch the system off at the thermostat to stop the damage.
Check the filter. A completely blocked filter can freeze a system solid.
Open interior doors and run ceiling fans to move what cool air is left around the house.

What we can and can’t do at 3am

Straight about this, because “24/7” gets used loosely.

A licensed, trained technician can, at any hour: diagnose the fault, replace failed electrical components (capacitors, contactors, relays, fuses) clear a blocked condensate drain, reset a tripped float switch, recharge a system, repair accessible refrigerant leaks, and get most systems running again.

We generally can’t, overnight: source a specific part from a supplier that is shut, complete a full system changeout, or carry out permitted work needing an inspection. If your compressor has failed at midnight, the honest answer is that we will confirm it, get you the number, and be back when the supply house opens, not that we will replace it before breakfast.

Cost, plainly

After-hours work costs more than a scheduled daytime visit. That is universal in the trade, and anyone telling you otherwise is either not actually available at night or is recovering it somewhere else.

What we will do is tell you the diagnostic charge when you call, before anyone is dispatched, and the repair price before any work starts. No hidden fees, no number arrives as a surprise at the end.

If the fault turns out to be something that can safely wait until morning, we will say so.

Do you charge more for nights and weekends?

Yes. After-hours work costs more than a scheduled daytime visit, everywhere in the trade. You'll be told the diagnostic charge when you call rather than when we arrive.

How quickly can someone get here?

It depends on where you are and how many calls are ahead of you on the night. We won't put a number on it in advance, because a promise we can't keep on an August night is worth less to you than an honest answer when you ring.

My AC died and it's a holiday weekend. Are you actually working?

Yes. Holiday weekends are among our busiest, because that's when systems run hardest.

Should I keep resetting the breaker?

No. Reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and call. Repeated resets on a genuine fault are a fire risk.

Can you fix it tonight, or will you just get it limping to morning?

Most emergency calls are electrical or drainage and are properly repaired on the night. If it needs a part the supply house has to open for, we'll tell you that rather than improvise.
