AC Installation and Replacement in Belleair and Clearwater
Replacing an air conditioner is the largest single purchase most homeowners make for their house short of a roof, and it is made under bad conditions.
Usually in summer, usually because something just failed, usually with three quotes that don’t agree and no way to judge between them.
The quotes disagree because they’re often not for the same thing. One is for a bigger system than the house needs. One is for a matched replacement of what’s already there, whether or not that was ever right. One is priced against a rebate that expires. Underneath, the equipment is more similar than the prices suggest. The part that actually determines whether you’re comfortable in ten years is not on the quote at all.
Why sizing matters more than brand in Florida
An oversized air conditioner is a worse outcome than a slightly undersized one, which is not what most people expect.
A system that is too large cools the air to the thermostat’s setpoint quickly and then shuts off. That sounds efficient. But cooling and dehumidifying are two different jobs, and the second one takes run time. In this climate, a system that satisfies the thermostat in eight minutes leaves the house cold and damp: clammy air, condensation, and the conditions that grow mould. It also starts and stops far more often than it should, which is what wears out compressors.
Correct sizing comes from the house: square footage, ceiling height, insulation, window area and orientation, duct condition, and how much of the shell faces west into an afternoon sun. It does not come from the label on the old unit, which may itself have been wrong for twenty years.
That is the question worth asking every contractor who quotes you, including us: how did you arrive at this size?

Every new split system sold in the Southeast has to meet a minimum efficiency standard, so the floor is already reasonably high. Above that floor, the honest calculation is unglamorous: a higher-rated system costs more up front and returns it through lower bills over years, and whether that trade works depends on how long you plan to be in the house and how much you run the system.
In Pinellas the run hours are high enough that stepping up is often worth it, because this is not a climate where the AC sits idle for six months. But it is arithmetic, not an upgrade tier, and it should be presented that way. Ask for the numbers.
Two things that matter more here than the rating
Variable-speed or two-stage operation. Longer, gentler run cycles remove far more humidity than short hard ones.
A properly matched indoor coil. An outdoor unit paired to the wrong coil doesn’t deliver its rated performance no matter what the sticker says.
The refrigerant change, plainly
New residential systems no longer use R-410A. Since January 2025 manufacturers have built to lower-global-warming refrigerants (R-454B and R-32) under the EPA’s Technology Transitions rule.
What that means for you:
- If your system runs on R-410A and works, keep it. Servicing and recharging it is legal and R-410A remains available.
- If it needs a large refrigerant repair, the arithmetic against replacement has moved. Worth pricing both.
- If you’re replacing now, you’re getting current-refrigerant equipment, which is the right side of the transition to be on.
Anyone using the phase-out as a reason you must replace a working system today is selling, not advising.
What installation day looks like
Old equipment is recovered and removed. Refrigerant recovery is a legal requirement, not an optional line. New equipment is set, the line set is evaluated and either reused or replaced, the electrical and condensate connections are made, the system is evacuated and charged to specification, and then it is tested and the airflow checked before anyone leaves.
Most single-system residential changeouts are a one-day job. If the ductwork needs attention it can run longer, and you’ll know that before the day rather than during it.

Questions Pinellas County homeowners ask about AC installation
How long does an AC system last in Florida?
Typically 10 to 15 years. Coastal properties often sit at the lower end. Salt air corrodes outdoor coils. Maintenance moves the number more than brand does.
Should I replace the indoor unit at the same time?
Almost always yes. A mismatched outdoor unit and indoor coil don't deliver rated efficiency or capacity, and mixing an old coil with new equipment can affect the manufacturer warranty.
How long does the installation take?
Most single-system replacements are one day. If the ductwork needs attention it can run longer, and you'll know that before the day rather than during it.
Do you handle the permit?
Yes. HVAC changeouts are permitted work in Pinellas municipalities and we take care of it.
Can you install a system I bought myself?
We'd need to talk it through. Equipment bought outside the trade supply chain usually carries no manufacturer warranty when installed by a third party, which tends to cost more than it saved.
Is it worth waiting until my system fails completely?
Replacing on your schedule is cheaper and calmer than replacing in an emergency in August. If yours is past twelve years and needing repairs, getting a number now costs nothing but a diagnostic visit.
