Most homeowners never think about ductwork until something goes visibly wrong: a room that will not cool, a vent that barely moves air, or a utility bill that climbed 30 percent without explanation. The ducts are hidden in the attic, behind walls, or under the house. Out of sight, and usually out of mind until the symptoms become impossible to ignore.
In Pinellas County, the problem is accelerated by climate. Ducts run through attics that reach 140 to 160 degrees in summer. The temperature difference between the cooled air inside the duct and the air outside it is enormous, and every leak, gap, or deteriorated section is a place where you are paying to cool the attic instead of the house.

Rooms that won’t cool
The AC runs, the thermostat reads correctly, but one or two rooms stay warm. The most common cause is a crushed, kinked, or disconnected branch duct in the attic. The air never arrives.
Weak airflow at the registers
If you hold your hand over a vent and barely feel air moving, the duct serving that register may be partially collapsed, blocked, or detached from the trunk line. The blower is working; the path is not.
Higher energy bills
Duct leaks force the system to run longer to reach the thermostat setting. The equipment is not failing; it is cooling the attic along with the house, and you are paying for both.
Uneven temperatures room to room
A five-degree spread between rooms served by the same system usually points to duct imbalance: different run lengths, different leak rates, or a branch that was undersized from the start.
Musty or stale smells from vents
Duct insulation that has absorbed moisture grows mold. In Florida’s humidity, a duct with a damaged vapor barrier will sweat, and once the insulation is wet, the smell does not go away without replacing the affected section.
Visible damage in the attic
Torn, sagging, or disconnected flex duct is obvious when you look. So is rodent damage: chewed insulation, droppings along the runs, and holes in the inner liner. If you see it, it needs to come out.
What a duct assessment involves
A technician inspects the accessible duct runs (attic, crawlspace, or mechanical closet) for physical damage, connection integrity, insulation condition, and signs of moisture or contamination. We check airflow at each register and compare it against what the system should be delivering.
The assessment tells you three things: what the ducts are doing now, what they should be doing, and what it takes to close the gap. Some systems need a section replaced. Some need joints sealed and insulation repaired. Some need a full replacement because the material has reached the end of its useful life.

Most residential duct systems in Pinellas County are flex duct: an inner plastic liner, a layer of fiberglass insulation, and an outer vapor barrier. The material is lightweight and inexpensive to install, which is why builders use it. It works well when it is new, properly supported, and correctly sealed at every connection.
After 15 to 20 years in a Florida attic, the outer jacket cracks and the insulation compresses or absorbs moisture. Connections loosen. Straps sag and let runs droop until kinks restrict airflow. The inner liner can tear at stress points.
A duct system in that condition is not broken in the way a dead compressor is broken; it degrades gradually, and each small problem steals a little more airflow. The homeowner adjusts the thermostat, the system runs longer, the bill climbs, and nobody connects it to the ducts because the AC itself still works.

Rodent damage
Rats and squirrels chew through flex duct to nest in the insulation. The damage is usually in the attic, and it is often more extensive than the first visible hole suggests. We check the full run, not just the obvious entry point.
Contaminated duct sections are replaced, not patched. The insulation cannot be cleaned to a standard that makes sense in a system blowing air into living space.

How do I know if my ducts are the problem?
If certain rooms are consistently warm while the AC runs fine in the rest of the house, or if your energy bill has climbed without an obvious reason, ductwork is one of the first things to check. We test airflow at each register and inspect the runs in the attic.
How much does duct work cost?
It depends on what needs doing. Sealing a few joints is a different job from replacing a trunk line. We quote after inspecting. The age of the ducts, the material, the accessibility, and how much needs replacing all move the number.
How long do ducts last in Florida?
Flex duct in a hot attic typically lasts 15 to 20 years before the insulation and vapor barrier deteriorate enough to matter. Metal duct lasts longer structurally but the joints and connections still fail over time. Most of the duct problems we see in Pinellas County are on systems installed in the 1990s and early 2000s.
Can you fix rodent damage in ductwork?
Yes. Rodents chew through flex duct insulation and the inner liner. We replace the damaged sections, seal the entry points where possible, and check the rest of the system for additional damage. The contaminated sections need to come out. Patching over rodent damage is not adequate.
Should I replace all my ducts when I get a new AC?
Not automatically. If the existing ducts are in good condition, properly sized, and well-sealed, they can stay. If they are deteriorated, undersized for the new equipment, or leaking significantly, replacing them at the same time as the AC avoids paying for attic access twice.
