When you turn on the AC and the house starts smelling wrong, the air moving through the ducts is carrying something it should not be. What you smell tells you what the problem is and how urgently it needs attention.
Musty or mildew smell
What it means: Mold or mildew is growing somewhere in the system — on the evaporator coil, inside the drain pan, in the ductwork, or on a dirty filter. Florida's humidity makes this the most common AC odor complaint. The system pulls moisture out of the air constantly, and anywhere that moisture sits becomes a growth surface.
What to do: Replace the air filter. Check the drain pan for standing water — it should drain freely. Pour a cup of vinegar down the condensate drain line cleanout. If the smell persists after those steps, the evaporator coil or ductwork may need professional cleaning.
Urgency: Low to moderate. Not dangerous, but mold spores circulating through the house affect air quality, especially for anyone with allergies or asthma.
Burning or electrical smell
What it means: An electrical component is overheating. The most common sources are a failing blower motor, a capacitor venting, or a wire insulation melting from a loose connection. Less commonly, dust burning off the heat strips if someone accidentally set the system to heat.
What to do: Turn the system off immediately. Do not restart it. An overheating motor or a wiring fault is a fire risk. Call a technician.
Urgency: High. Turn it off now.
Rotten egg or sulfur smell
What it means: If you have natural gas in the house (gas water heater, gas range, gas furnace), a rotten egg smell near the HVAC system could indicate a gas leak. Gas companies add the sulfur scent (mercaptan) so you can detect leaks.
What to do: Do not flip any electrical switches. Do not light anything. Open windows, leave the house, and call your gas utility's emergency line from outside. This is not an HVAC call — it is a gas emergency.
If you do not have natural gas in the house, the smell may be coming from a dead animal in the ductwork or from stagnant water in the drain pan. Still unpleasant, but not the same level of urgency.
Urgency: Emergency if gas is present. Moderate otherwise.
Sewage smell
What it means: A dry P-trap in a drain near the air handler, a cracked sewer vent pipe near ductwork, or a clogged condensate line draining into a sewer connection that has lost its water seal. The system's blower pulls air from wherever it can, and if there is an opening to the sewer line, it pulls that air into the house.
What to do: Pour water into any floor drains near the air handler to refill the P-trap. Check the condensate drain line connection. If the smell persists, the issue may be plumbing, not HVAC — a plumber can pressure-test the sewer vents.
Urgency: Moderate. Methane from sewer gas is a health concern at sustained exposure.
Chemical or exhaust smell
What it means: If the air handler is in the garage, the blower can pull in vehicle exhaust, paint fumes, or chemical vapors through gaps in the return duct or the air handler cabinet. This is a duct sealing issue, not an AC problem.
What to do: Check for gaps where the return duct connects to the air handler. Seal any visible gaps with mastic or foil tape (not cloth duct tape — it degrades). Do not store open chemical containers near the air handler.
Urgency: Moderate to high. Carbon monoxide from vehicle exhaust in the duct system is a health risk.
