AC Keeps Turning On and Off? What Short Cycling Means

An AC that starts, runs for a few minutes, shuts off, and restarts is short cycling. Here is what causes it and why ignoring it leads to bigger problems.

The system starts. It runs for two to five minutes. It shuts off. A few minutes later, it starts again. The house never reaches the set temperature.

This is called short cycling, and it puts serious stress on the compressor. A compressor is designed to run for 15 to 20 minutes at a time. Starting and stopping repeatedly generates heat in the windings and wears the mechanical components faster. Weeks of short cycling can turn a minor problem into a compressor replacement.

Causes you can check

Dirty air filter. A severely clogged filter restricts airflow to the point that the system overheats and the high-limit safety switch shuts it down. The system cools for a few minutes, the switch resets, and it starts again. Replace the filter.

Thermostat location. If the thermostat is in direct sunlight, near a lamp, above a vent, or next to an exterior door, it reads a temperature that does not match the rest of the house. It reaches the set point quickly (because it is being heated by something other than the room), shuts the system down, then calls for cooling again as soon as the artificial heat source moves on. If your thermostat is in a bad location, this is not something a filter change will solve — the thermostat needs to be relocated.

Thermostat malfunction. An aging or failing thermostat can send erratic signals — calling for cooling, canceling, calling again. If the system short cycles and the thermostat display flickers, goes blank intermittently, or shows inconsistent readings, the thermostat itself may be the problem.

Causes that need a technician

Oversized system. An AC that is too large for the house cools the air near the thermostat quickly but shuts off before it has run long enough to remove humidity or reach the far rooms. The house feels clammy even though the temperature is right. This is a design problem, not a repair. If the system was recently replaced and the short cycling started then, the replacement may be oversized.

Low refrigerant. A refrigerant leak reduces cooling capacity. The system runs, fails to cool efficiently, trips the low-pressure safety, shuts down, waits, and tries again. Each cycle is less effective than the last.

Failing compressor. Internal wear or a failing start capacitor can prevent the compressor from running a full cycle. It starts, overheats, trips the thermal overload, cools down, and tries again. This pattern will continue until the compressor fails completely.

Frozen evaporator coil. A coil freezing up (from a dirty filter, low refrigerant, or a dirty coil) will eventually trigger a high-pressure or low-pressure safety and shut the system down. The ice partially melts, the safety resets, and the cycle repeats.

What to do

Replace the filter first — it is the cheapest and most common cause. If the short cycling continues after a fresh filter has been in for 24 hours, the problem is deeper. Do not ignore it. Every short cycle is wear on the compressor.
