Every HVAC company sells maintenance plans. Most cost $100 to $200 per year and include one or two visits, a filter, and some kind of discount on repairs. The question is whether you need one.
The honest answer is: it depends.
When a maintenance plan is worth it
You do not do your own maintenance. If you do not change the filter regularly, do not rinse the condenser, and do not flush the drain line — and you know you will not start — a maintenance plan puts someone on the calendar to do it for you. The value is not the tasks themselves. It is the accountability. A system that gets checked twice a year lasts longer and breaks down less than one that runs until it fails.
Your system is older than 8 to 10 years. As components age, the chance of a mid-summer failure increases. A maintenance visit catches a weak capacitor, a worn contactor, or a slow refrigerant leak before it becomes an emergency call on the hottest day of the year. The visit costs less than the emergency.
You value the repair discount. Most plans include 10 to 15 percent off parts and labor. If you expect to need a repair in the next year — and on an older system, you probably will — the discount can offset the plan cost.
When it is not worth it
You already do your own basic maintenance. If you change the filter monthly, rinse the condenser twice a year, flush the drain line regularly, and the system is under 5 years old, you are already doing most of what a maintenance visit covers. The additional value of a professional visit is the electrical and refrigerant checks — important, but not necessarily needed annually on a new system.
Your system is under warranty. New systems come with manufacturer warranties covering parts for 5 to 10 years. A maintenance plan does not extend the warranty (check your warranty terms — some require proof of annual maintenance, in which case a single annual visit matters, but not necessarily a plan).
What we actually check during a maintenance visit
This is not a filter change and a pat on the back:
- Refrigerant pressures (verifies charge and detects slow leaks)
- Electrical connections (tightened, checked for heat damage)
- Capacitor health (tested with a meter — a weak capacitor shows up before it fails)
- Contactor condition (pitted contacts detected before they stop closing)
- Static pressure (measures airflow and duct health)
- Coil condition (both evaporator and condenser)
- Drain line flow (cleared if slow)
- Thermostat calibration
- Safety controls (float switch, high-limit, low-pressure)
The filter and rinse are things you can do. The electrical and pressure measurements are not.
